Esther Perel, psychotherapist, researcher and author of Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence (2006), has studied hundreds of couples around the world (South America, Europe and North America). In the following TED Talk, Esther Perel describes her view on infidelity.  By tracing the historical role of marriage throughout modern civilization, she attempts to explain why, in this day and age, infidelity is often experienced as being traumatic.
